Dating to the Showa … Read more A mid-20th-century Japanese cast-iron rabbit sculpture, naturalistically modelled in a seated posture with elongated upright ears. Dating to the Showa period, circa 1940s–1970s, the figure belongs to a recognised tradition of Japanese decorative cast-iron animal sculpture produced during the period.

The substantial iron casting is finished with a mottled copper and bronze-toned patinated surface, interspersed with areas of green oxidation that lend depth and variation to the modelling. These colours are described as an applied and naturally aged surface treatment over cast iron; no claim is made that the sculpture is bronze, solid copper, or copper-plated.

At 7.75 inches high and weighing approximately 3 lb, the sculpture has considerable substance for its scale. The naturalistic modelling, upright silhouette and aged surface make it particularly suited to traditional, eclectic, Japanese-inspired and collected interiors.
