A striking and highly collectible Salvador Dalí for Daum pâte de verre art-glass plate, created as part of the celebrated … Read more A striking and highly collectible Salvador Dalí for Daum pâte de verre art-glass plate, created as part of the celebrated collaboration between the Surrealist artist and the renowned French glassmaker Daum in which the artist's Surrealist drawings were translated into limited-edition gilt-decorated cobalt or amber glass plates and bowls by the Daum manufactory at Nancy, France.

This high-end collectible Daum/Dalí art-glass piece is a circular molded glass plate in deep cobalt-blue glass of slightly granular pâte de verre, decorated overall on the obverse with a Surrealist composition in raised matte gilding: a central caricature head of swirling cursive line — feminine in aspect with elongated cascading hair or veil. It is accompanied at left by a cruciform talisman and below by calligraphic flourishes incorporating the artist's signature "Dalí." After a design by Salvador Dalí (Spanish, 1904–1989).

The plate is executed in richly colored translucent pâte de verre glass, with Dalí's distinctive Surrealist imagery rendered in raised, highly dimensional gilt decoration. The central composition features Dalí's whimsical, dreamlike imagery surrounded by expressive calligraphic forms and the artist's signature. The French inscription “Ceci n'est pas une assiette” (“This is not a plate”) adds to the playful Surrealist character of the work.

The softly irregular, granular surface of the "pâte de verre " beautifully catches and diffuses the light, while the dimensional gilding provides a dramatic contrast against the jewel-like glass. The result is both a functional-form object and a true piece of 20th-century decorative art.

The Dalí–Daum collaboration is particularly celebrated for translating Dalí's drawings and Surrealist designs into Daum's distinctive pâte de verre medium. This example measures approximately 10½ inches in diameter, with a gently raised profile measuring approximately 1 inch deep at the outer rim. The plate is substantial and displays beautifully either flat or on a stand. Circa 1970s. France.

Condition: Very good vintage condition. No chips or cracks noted. Minor characteristics inherent to the pâte de verre manufacturing process and age may be present and are consistent with the nature of this handcrafted art glass.
