Born in Detroit, Michigan, American printmaker, painter, sculptor, and educator Andrew Rush completed his undergraduate studies under Lee Chesney at the University of Illinois, graduating with honors in 1953. Following service in the U.S. Marine Corps, he pursued graduate study in printmaking under Mauricio Lasansky at the University of Iowa (M.F.A., 1958) and was awarded a Fulbright Grant to study printmaking in Florence, Italy, in 1958.

Rush was appointed Associate Professor of Art at the University of Arizona (1959–1969), where he established the university's printmaking program, and co-directed the Rockefeller Foundation Indian Arts Project (1960–1964). A vital catalyst for community-based creative spaces, Rush co-founded the historic artists' commune Rancho Linda Vista in Oracle, Arizona, in 1968, and later established The Drawing Studio in Tucson in 1992.

Recognized for his mastery of intaglio printmaking, drawing, and figural observation, Rush’s work has earned significant honors, including the International Printmakers Award (Seattle Art Museum, 1963), a Purchase Award (Brooklyn Museum Biennial, 1964), and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Tucson Pima Arts Council (2006). His career was celebrated in a major retrospective exhibition, A Physical Art: The Intaglio Prints of Andrew Rush, 1957–1997 (University of Arizona Museum of Art, 2004).
