Porcelain vase duo designed for rosenthal studio-line, combining johan van loon’s folded forms with helmut drexler’s experimental surface decoration.
made in germany in 1993 and 1994, the two vases feature satin multicolour and iridescent eosin finishes in shifting shades of gold, green, violet and bronze. The low model 4039/16 has a broad horizontal profile, while the taller model 4013/26 rises in an asymmetric folded form. Their metallic surfaces change noticeably with the light, giving each vase a different appearance depending on its position.
dutch ceramic and textile artist johan van loon was known for translating the appearance of pleated and folded fabric into porcelain. From 1980 onward, he designed a series of expressive forms for rosenthal studio-line.
helmut drexler was a german porcelain painter and designer who became head of rosenthal’s decoration department. His technically complex metallic, marbled and iridescent finishes played an important role in the manufacturer’s experimental porcelain production during the late 20th century.
