A captivating and richly authentic pair of antique wooden apothecary jars, beautifully embodying the craftsmanship and intellectual tradition of 19th-century European pharmacy. Turned from solid wood and finished with a warm, glowing patina developed over generations, these jars exude a quiet elegance that only time can bestow. The surfaces display a wonderfully aged character, with subtle tonal variation and gentle wear that enhance their historic charm.
Each jar is meticulously hand-labeled in bold black lettering, denoting their original pharmaceutical contents in traditional Latin. One is marked “CORT: CHIN: REG: PULV:”, meaning Cortex Chinae Regius Pulvis—powdered royal cinchona bark, historically valued as a source of quinine for treating fevers. The other reads “FOL: SENN: SINE: RES: PULV:”, meaning Folia Sennae Sine Resina Pulvis—powdered senna leaves without resin, a refined preparation used in traditional herbal medicine.
The hand-painted typography adds an artisanal quality, reinforcing their origins in a working apothecary where Latin served as the universal language of medicine.
Opening the lid reveals an especially compelling detail: an original interior label and handwritten inscription that provide further provenance. The printed label reads “Apotheke zur heil. Dreifaltigkeit des Josef Fischer in Stockerau,” identifying the jars as originating from the “Pharmacy of the Holy Trinity” operated by Josef Fischer in Stockerau, Austria. This rare surviving label offers a tangible connection to a specific place and practitioner, elevating these from decorative objects to true historical artifacts.
Each jar measures approximately 6 inches high and 3.5 inches wide and deep, making them ideal for display on a shelf, desk, or within a curated cabinet of curiosities. Good antique condition with light signs of wear and use. There is some residual powder residue in each. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Whether styled in a traditional study, apothecary-inspired interior, or a refined modern space, these jars bring depth, narrative, and old-world sophistication.
A remarkable pairing that blends form, function, and history—perfect for collectors of medical antiques, apothecary artifacts, or anyone drawn to the enduring beauty of handcrafted objects with a story to tell.
