A handsome and historically significant Grand Tour souvenir, this heavy, thick brass model depicts the famed Butte de Lion monument at Waterloo, one of Europe's most enduring symbols of the Battle of Waterloo and Napoleon's final defeat. The original lion sculpture was created in 1822 by renowned Dutch sculptor Jean-François Van Geel, serving as the centerpiece for the monumental Lion Mound (Butte du Lion), which was completed in 1826 to commemorate the thousands who lost their lives during the battle.
The monument is traditionally believed to mark the spot where the Prince of Orange was wounded during the fighting. Likely acquired as a Grand Tour souvenir or produced for travelers inspired by this celebrated European landmark, this finely cast example displays exceptional high-relief detail throughout, from the lion's flowing mane and muscular form to the crisply defined architectural pedestal boldly inscribed "WATERLOO." Presented on the reverse side is the commemorative inscription "XVIII JUIN MDCCCXV" (18 June 1815), the date of the Battle of Waterloo rendered in French and Roman numerals, further enhancing its historical significance.
The model measures 3.5 inches wide, 2.25 inches deep, and 4.75 inches high and remains in very good antique condition with an attractive, naturally aged brass patina. Weighing just under two pounds, the substantial casting gives the piece an impressive presence despite its compact size. Good antique condition with untouched surface, there is a modern pad add under the base to a surface barrier. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Richly patinated with age, it makes a distinguished display for a library, study, military collection, or Grand Tour cabinet.
