The tall tapered basket is intricately woven in several distinct patterns, including tightly woven horizontal bands, open diamond latticework, and a substantial braided rim. A tall wrapped loop handle rises above the basket for pulling or carrying.
The basket rests on a shaped solid wood base fitted with two slender black metal spoked wheels and an iron axle. A small wooden resting peg at the front allows the basket to stand upright when not being pulled.
The variation in the weaving is particularly attractive and gives the piece a much more decorative presence than an ordinary utilitarian market basket. Originally intended for transporting provisions or purchases, it now makes an unusual sculptural accent and could be used for displaying flowers, storing rolled towels or textiles, holding magazines, or simply as a decorative piece in a French Country, European farmhouse, rustic, or eclectic interior.
