Born in Rhode Island, Charles Stetson opened his first studio in 1878 in Providence and during the 1880s was a leading figure in the development of the Providence Art Club. He later opened a studio in Boston. In 1888, Stetson took his first trip to California where he found his "dream trees", eucalyptus that appeared in many of his landscapes prior to his visit. In 1894, Stetson moved to California where he lived and worked for seven years before moving back to New England. In 1904, he left for Europe, living in Paris before settling in Rome where he continued to paint until his death.

Charles Walter Stetson exhibited widely and with success including at the New York Etching Club (1886), Providence Artist Association (1882), Rome International (1904, 1911), Boston Art Club (1882-1884, 1901), Detroit Museum (1913 memorial), Panama-Pacific International Exposition (1915), Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1882-1883, 1901-1902), Boston Museum of Fine Art (1912 memorial), Cincinnati Art Museum, and the St. Louis Art Museum. His work can be found in permanent collections including the National Museum of American Art (Washington, D.C.), the De Young Museum (San Francisco, CA), and the Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.).
