Signed lower left "Sergio Telles" (Brazilian, 1936 - 2022), titled 'Porto Seguro' and dated 1976.
An energetic oil landscape showing beach-goers enjoying the coastal resort town of Porto Seguro, Bahia, Brazil.
A notable and prolific Brazilian modernist, Sergio Telles first studied at Rio de Janeiro's Colméia in 1954, and started exhibiting with success the following year in the same city. In 1957, Telles studied abroad in Europe, traveling to France, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Italy, where he was accepted into the art restoration internship program at the Vatican Pinacoteca. Upon his return to Brazil, Telles attended the studios of prominent artists such as Rodolfo Chambelland, Oswaldo Teixeira, and Marie Nivoulies de Pierrefort. In 1964, Telles entered into diplomacy which provided him with new opportunities for cultural and artistic exchange.
In the 1970s, Telles traveled to Porto Seguro at the suggestion of the writer Jorge Amado. During this trip, he produced drawings and oils that were published in a book with the collaboration of Jorge Amado and Jeanine Warnwood. Additionally, he is the author of "Nivouliès de Pierrefort," published in Buenos Aires by the Museum of Modern Art in 1974. In 1978, he illustrated the book "Rio de Janeiro," launched at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro. Telles exhibited widely and with success including throughout Europe, Japan, Argentina and Brazil, among others.
