Fantastic vintage Tropical or Coastal style rattan 3-piece sofa and lounge chair set by Calif-Asia composed of walnut toned rattan … Read more Fantastic vintage Tropical or Coastal style rattan 3-piece sofa and lounge chair set by Calif-Asia composed of walnut toned rattan frames with basket weave decks, brass decorative arm details, loose, zippered newer Dacron wrapped foam cushions wearing steel blue-gray tweed fabric. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if they have been refinished or restored. Specifically, these have been professionally cleaned but they do retain a few stubborn stains and the wrap on one leg has been replaced. This is a marvelous sofa and lounge chair duo by Calif-Asia both pieces are composed of beautifully bent walnut toned rattan frames with rattan wrapped joints each hosting loose, zippered Dacron wrapped foam seat and back cushions wearing a spectacular steel blue or blue-gray tone on tone tweed fabric. Okay… these pieces have been reupholstered over newer cushions which we did not do, and this fabric color is beautiful… but a bit one-note, however… it serves wonderfully as a nice neutral background and could take on many looks given some fun decorative accent pillows or a bright blanket or throw! Think of all the options!! The seat cushions rest upon an intricately woven “basket weave” rattan deck and they bear a low stance with a slight back lean creating an ergonomically pleasing seating experience. The sofa is technically three separate pieces… one piece with no arms, two with one arm each. Plus one separate chair with two arms. The arms are straight and each hosts a little brass decorative detail at the front. So… talk about endless configurations!!! We are talking versatility OVERLOAD with placement options! A single chair next to a 3-piece sofa, a two piece loveseat and two side chairs, 4 separate chairs, and SO many more options!! Check out the photos for just a few of our ideas but if you can think of it… it’s probably possible!! This is EXACTLY the set you need to lean back and relax in your Tropical, Coastal, Island, Boho Chic, or even Campaign or Mid-Century Modern style sitting, family, or living room. Calif-Asia was founded in the 1920’s by Bessie Abbott Ochs as a prominent importer and manufacturer of bentwood and rattan furniture based out of Los Angeles, California. During the 1940’s through the 1960’s Calif-Asia capitalized on the booming demand for casual and rather bohemian style home aesthetics. Their pieces stood out due to their distinct bent cane and rattan configurations, iron frames, and use of wicker and cane. They collaborated with the era’s most legendary designers including Paul McCobb, Milo Baughman, and Danny Ho Fung. Calif-Asia gained massive popularity in the 50’s and 60’s and rivaled with other luxury makers such as McGuire and Ficks Reed as production methods evolved overseas before scaling back in the late 20th Century. The company closed its doors in 1969; however, they are a staple for collectors in vintage furnishings, and their iconic pieces are highly sought after today.
