John Anderson, 1st Viscount Waverley (1882–1958), was a distinguished British civil servant and politician, known for his leadership during critical periods of British history. Born in Edinburgh, he was educated at the University of Edinburgh and became an influential civil servant, serving as the Under-Secretary of State for Ireland and later as Permanent Under-Secretary of State at the Home Office.

He served as Governor of Bengal from 1932 to 1937. During his tenure, he faced significant challenges, including managing the effects of the Great Depression on the region and addressing rising political tensions as India moved toward greater autonomy. Anderson's administration dealt with growing nationalist movements, including the activities of the Indian National Congress, and he was tasked with maintaining stability amid increasing calls for independence.

During World War II, Anderson played a vital role in the British government, particularly as Lord President of the Council and Home Secretary. He is perhaps best remembered for the "Anderson shelters," inexpensive air-raid shelters that he introduced to protect civilians from bombings. In 1943, he served as Chancellor of the Exchequer, where he managed the country's wartime economy.
