A colorful matched pair of vintage ceramic equestrian figures depicting the legendary English highwaymen Dick Turpin and Tom King. Created in the tradition of Victorian Staffordshire flatback figures, each subject is modeled on horseback above a naturalistic green base with his name printed across the front.
Dick Turpin rides a glossy black horse, while Tom King is shown on a white horse. Both figures wear richly colored cobalt-blue coats, mint-green waistcoats, orange neckwear, yellow trousers, and hand-applied gilt accents. Their expressive faces, spirited horses, and loosely painted details give the pair the engaging folk-art character associated with Staffordshire decorative pottery.
Figures of Turpin and King were traditionally produced as companions. Their exploits became part of English popular folklore and were further romanticized in 19th-century literature and theater, inspiring Staffordshire potters to represent the two highwaymen as equestrian figures.
The figures have flat, undecorated backs and closed glazed undersides with small firing vents. Faint ink-stamp remnants are present underneath but are no longer legible. A previous dealer label identifies the pair as English Staffordshire, circa 1960; the maker is unknown, and the figures are presented as mid-20th-century interpretations rather than Victorian originals.
A distinctive decorative pair for a mantel, bookcase, traditional interior, equestrian collection, or grouping of English ceramics.
Sold as a pair.
Each measures approximately 7″ W × 2.5″ D × 10.5″ H.

Fine overall glaze crazing is present, most visibly on the undersides and lighter-colored areas. The undersides display surface marks, discoloration, residue, and shelf wear. There is minor rubbing and variation to the hand-painted decoration and gilt accents. Faint remnants of former ink stamps are present underneath but are no longer legible. A previous dealer inventory label remains attached to one underside. No major chips, cracks, repairs, or significant losses were observed. Please review all photographs carefully, including the undersides and delicate projecting areas. less
