An exceptional piece of sporting history and refined design, this solid silver presentation trophy cigarette box is a remarkable find. Elegantly simple in form yet rich in detail, the lid is beautifully engraved in script:
“Piedmont Fox Hounds Heavyweight Race 1946 Mr. William F. Carl’s Sir Rowdy Ridden by Mr. Frank Wilson.”
Founded in 1904 in Virginia’s famed hunt country, Piedmont Fox Hounds is one of America’s oldest and most storied fox hunting clubs. Renowned for its formal drag hunts and point-to-point steeplechase races, Piedmont has long attracted distinguished horsemen and society figures. The Heavyweight Race, part of the region’s competitive steeplechase tradition, showcased both rider and horse in fast-paced, cross-country courses — a rigorous test of athleticism and partnership.
This impressive piece weighs a substantial 353 grams of solid sterling silver and measures 5.75 inches long, 4.5 inches deep, and 0.50 inch high. Inside, a gold gilt interior is enhanced by an elegant engraved, dimensional repeating pattern, amplifying the luxurious presentation. Good vintage condition with signs of surface wear - scratches/small indents. Please review the photos for further condition assessment. Pictures in photos are not related to the item and are for presentation purposes.
A fine tobacciana collectible, it also makes a striking decorative accent for a dresser, desk, or table, equally suited to holding small jewelry, cufflinks, or keepsakes. Beyond its beauty, it carries a meaningful provenance — Mr. William F. Carl, the original honoree, was a noted Maryland sportsman who went on to found The Goshen Hunt Club in Montgomery County, MD in 1957.
A rare fusion of equestrian history, American sporting life, and mid-century silver craftsmanship — a distinguished addition to any curated collection.
