A monumental antique neo-renaissance display cabinet/bookcase, representative of european historicism from the second half of the 19th century.
the piece features a highly decorative, architectural form, richly adorned with renaissance-inspired wood carvings. Particularly noteworthy are the hand-carved floral motifs, flower vases/baskets, acanthus leaves, volutes, and classical ornaments, juxtaposed with the rhythmic fluting and profiled cornices characteristic of the era.
origin
central europe – most likely the austro-hungarian region or germany
construction and materials
• height: 202 cm
• width: 84.5 cm
• depth: 45 cm
top surface made of solid pine wood.
body constructed of wood and finished with natural oak veneer.
the piece features three opening glazed doors and two narrow, fixed angled glass panels, allowing it to serve as an elegant display cabinet or bookcase.
the wood carving is one of the piece's most significant features; the elaborate ornamental frieze and the rhythmic vertical fluting on the lower section are particularly striking.
condition
the piece remains in its original, authentic condition, showing visible signs of age and use. The piece has been cleaned—inside, underneath, and on the exterior—to remove dust and surface grime, without attempting to completely eliminate the natural signs of age.
the bookcase features adjustable shelves; the locks and keys are functional, although the lock on the right side sticks.
there are minor dents, discolorations, small spots, and traces of long-term use, all of which have been preserved as part of the authentic patina.
the black finish remains intact across the entire surface, with the exception of the underside. Based on visual inspection alone, it is impossible to determine with absolute certainty whether the finish is original or a later application; therefore, i do not present this as a confirmed fact.
this is a large, heavy, and highly decorative piece of furniture in a historicist style—crafted according to 19th-century designs—and is suitable for a formal interior.
