A handsome example of Edwardian-era English tableware, this antique biscuit barrel dates to circa 1915 and beautifully combines richly figured wood, gleaming silverplate, and classic country-house styling.
The cylindrical wooden body displays a particularly wonderful natural grain, with warm variations in tone that give the piece exceptional character and depth. Silverplate fittings provide an elegant contrast, including the fitted lid, upper and lower bands, and graceful swing handle. At the center is a decorative unengraved shield-shaped cartouche, offering a wonderfully clean appearance while retaining its traditional period character. Lifting the lid reveals a porcelain interior liner, a desirable feature that reflects the quality and practical craftsmanship of the piece. The substantial swing handle allows the barrel to be easily carried and creates an especially attractive silhouette.
The barrel measures approximately 6 inches high, 5.75 inches wide, and 5.5 inches deep, with an overall height of approximately 9 inches when the handle is extended. Good antique condition with expected age-related wear and signs of handling. Some wear to the silverplate. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
With its beautifully figured wood, bright silverplate fittings, original-style porcelain liner, and timeless proportions, this circa 1915 English biscuit barrel is a charming and highly decorative survivor from the golden age of traditional English entertaining.
