I originally found the bones of the sofa at a garage sale and was immediately drawn to its unusual construction and potential. I then took it to Mr. Gonzales, an upholsterer who kept it for approximately six weeks while he carefully and meticulously transformed it with new fabric.

The upholstery work was done with exceptional attention to detail. The large-scale damask pattern was carefully positioned and aligned across the cushions, bolsters and upholstered surfaces rather than simply being cut and applied without regard to the design.

The result is custom all the way.

COMPACT SOFA, SURPRISING FUNCTION

Despite its substantial appearance, this is actually a fairly compact sofa.

Remove the loose cushions and upholstered bolsters and the remaining upholstered base is approximately the size of a twin bed, creating a generous flat surface that can be used for lounging or for an overnight guest.

That makes it especially useful in a room where you want comfortable seating without giving up the possibility of occasional sleeping space.

REMOVABLE BOLSTERS

The upholstered side bolsters are one of the cleverest elements of the design.

They are completely removable, but they are not simply loose cushions resting against the sides. Each bolster is held sturdily and securely in place by support rods and substantial metal hardware.

When installed, they feel like an integrated part of the sofa. When removed, they open up the full upholstered platform.

AND IT ROLLS

One of my favorite features is something you rarely find on upholstered furniture like this:

the entire sofa is on wheels.

The casters make it surprisingly easy to reposition the sofa within a room without having to lift, drag or wrestle with a heavy piece of furniture.

That mobility makes the sofa particularly appealing for a studio, loft, guest room, den, media room or other flexible living space where furniture arrangements may change.

CUSTOM UPHOLSTERY

The fabric is a richly textured, large-scale damask in cream and taupe with muted brown and rose tones.

The pattern has a raised, soft texture that gives it much more depth and richness than a flat printed upholstery fabric.

Combined with the unconventional construction, removable bolsters and rolling base, the fabric gives the piece a distinctly eclectic, slightly bohemian character.

It feels collected and individual rather than mass-produced.

CONDITION

The sofa is in great condition.

It has been well cared for and has spent considerable time in storage, so it has not experienced the kind of continuous everyday wear that many used sofas have.

Naturally, it is pre-owned furniture, and anyone seriously interested is welcome to inspect it carefully in person.

WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL

This is not a sofa I can simply point to in a furniture catalog.

It began with an unusual frame that I happened to discover and became a custom upholstery project with features you rarely see together:
