Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this exceptional early 19th-century antique Mahogany Drop-Leaf Table. Large, old-growth, solid Mahogany single boards were carefully selected for the tabletop and corresponding leaves. The Caribbean Mahogany used in the table was among the most desirable woods in the world and exhibits beautiful chatoyancy, creating an almost lenticular effect as the surface is viewed from different angles. Caribbean Mahogany was harvested to near-extinction levels, and the few remaining trees are thankfully protected today, making this wood commercially extinct and available only through the reclamation of old stock
The Mahogany displays beautiful figuring and would have been an expensive and highly desirable material for both the cabinetmaker and their wealthy clientele. The legs exhibit a wonderful turning pattern, while the reed carving is well proportioned and masterfully executed. The original brass casters remain in place and, remarkably, still roll smoothly after nearly two centuries of use.
Mahogany veneer was used for the apron over New England White Pine. The table is refreshingly undisturbed, retaining its original hinges, scribe marks, most of its original fasteners, and glue blocks. Overall, the table remains in very good condition. Our only condition notes are some light scratches and minor surface wear, a small veneer repair to one of the leg blocks, and an old repair at the center hinge on one side. The latter is commonplace on antique tables of this period and constitutes an insignificant restoration.
When the leaves are down, the table measures 22 3/4" wide (21 3/8" tabletop only) x 41" deep x 29" tall. With both leaves raised and locked in place, it measures 55" wide.
