A wonderful piece of North Carolina pottery by M.L. Owens, this hand-thrown stoneware jug dates to 1988 and reflects the traditional pottery heritage of the Seagrove area.
The substantial rounded form features a gracefully arched handle, short neck, and warm gray stoneware glaze accented by delicate hand-painted cobalt blue floral and grass decoration. Subtle variations in the glaze and surface are characteristic of handmade studio pottery and give the piece wonderful character.
Standing approximately 9 inches tall, this signed and dated jug has a strong sculptural presence while remaining beautifully understated. An appealing addition to a collection of North Carolina or Southern pottery, it also displays beautifully as a decorative vessel on a shelf, console, sideboard, or tabletop.
