An original 19th-century hand-colored stone lithograph of the Musk Ox, Plate CXI from John James Audubon and Reverend John Bachman's landmark The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America — the celebrated mammal series that followed Audubon's Birds of America. This is from the octavo edition, drawn from nature by John Woodhouse Audubon, transferred to stone by William E. Hitchcock, and lithographed, printed, and hand-colored by the distinguished Philadelphia printmaker John T. Bowen. The plate shows two shaggy musk oxen in a windswept northern landscape, full of the warm hand-applied color and fine detail that make these prints so collectible. Presented in a slim black frame with a wide neutral mat.
Toning, foxing, and aging are present and entirely consistent with an original print from 1849–1854, the year the book was published, lending genuine antique character. A handsome, giftable piece of American natural-history art.
