A charming signed miniature pottery jug by noted Seagrove, North Carolina potter Joe Owen (1910–1986).
Hand-thrown in the traditional North Carolina pottery form, the diminutive vessel features a rounded body, narrow rolled mouth and applied loop handle. A soft pale blush-to-cream glaze covers the body, accented by hand-applied cobalt-blue bands around the shoulder and rim. Subtle firing variations, speckling and traces of the potter’s hand give the surface wonderful character.
Joe Owen was a member of the important Owen family of Seagrove-area potters and spent his life working within North Carolina’s historic pottery tradition. The underside of this piece bears his incised handwritten signature, “Joe Owen.”
At approximately 4.25 inches high, this small-scale jug is particularly appealing displayed as a piece of Southern folk pottery, incorporated into a collection of American studio ceramics, or styled individually on a shelf or tabletop.
A wonderful example of the enduring Seagrove pottery tradition and an appealing signed piece by a documented North Carolina potter.
