Exceptional early 20th-century commercial display showcase by Manhattan Show Case Co. of 359 Canal Street, New York, retaining its original maker's plaque.
Measuring an impressive 72 inches wide, this substantial antique showcase combines the character of an early New York retail fixture with the craftsmanship and presence of fine traditional furniture.
The expansive glass-enclosed upper vitrine features a rich red-lined display surface and mirrored sliding rear doors, which beautifully reflect light and displayed objects while also providing convenient access to the interior. The combination of glass, mirrors, and the vivid red interior creates a particularly striking presentation for jewelry, collectibles, decorative objects, silver, watches, textiles, or other treasured pieces.
The substantial wood base is raised on beautifully carved cabriole-style legs with elaborate foliate detailing and carved feet. Molded edges and warm wood tones further enhance its traditional character.
Below the display area, the reverse incorporates drawers for additional concealed storage, making this an exceptionally functional piece as well as a dramatic decorative statement.
The original manufacturer's plaque reads:
“Manhattan Show Case Co.
359 Canal St., N.Y.”
Originally produced as a fine commercial retail showcase, today it would make an outstanding collector's vitrine, jewelry display, gallery case, boutique fixture, library display, or statement piece in a sophisticated residential interior.
A distinctive surviving example of historic New York commercial craftsmanship with wonderful scale, carved detailing, mirrored elements, storage, and identifiable maker provenance.
