It's Nupe work from Nigeria's Niger River basin, where doors are built plank by plank rather than as one wide board, and each plank earns its own distinct scene instead of repeating a single pattern. Bands of woven basket-weave lattice separate the figures and keep the whole composition legible even at a glance, structure as much as decoration. Three vertical hardwood planks are joined edge to edge and braced across the reverse with horizontal timber cleats, honest construction under a deep, near-black patina built up over decades of handling. The elephant alone is worth the wall space, a rare figure to see on a door this size, rendered in the same crisp low relief as everything else rather than singled out for special treatment. At 24 inches wide and 66 inches tall, it's narrow enough for a hallway or the side of a doorway and dense enough with carving to reward anyone who stops to actually look. Group it with other narrow panels or let it stand alone, either way it earns the second look.
