DISTINCTIVE CARVED FEDERAL MANTLEPIECE; New York, c. 1818
This large mantle shelf, with its original black painted surface, is distinguished by multiple decorative details: applied drapery swags on the front edge of the shaped shelf; a cove molding above a framed fire box opening which is flanked by corbels above reeded engaged columns; and columns that feature counter-sunk leaf carvings, foliate capitals and stepped bases.
The Mantelpiece was rescued from a house build by Isaac Powell in upstate New York, in the village of Laurens (near present day Oneonta). Powell, a talented local builder, constructed several houses in the town c. 1815-1840, which were characterized by “four-square” construction, elaborate details and Federal features, including mantlepieces. This one came from his own home, the Mayall-Powell House.
Powell was likely inspired by the designs of Robert Adams (1728-1792) an English architect and designer whose works and publications influenced English, Scottish and American designers of the 18th and 19th centuries. The shelf reflects Powell’s ability to interpret and adapt Adam’s designs for remote market in the first years of the United States.
