Vintage Grand Tour Map Coffee Table in Old World Oxblood and Antiqued Gold
Dramatic, richly layered and unapologetically Old World, this substantial vintage coffee table has been transformed into a distinctive Grand Tour statement piece. Its antique-style world map, deeply carved cabriole legs and complex oxblood finish give it the atmosphere of a table collected for an Italian palazzo, private library or historic European interior.
Measuring 50 inches wide, the table offers an impressive presence while retaining practical proportions for a living room seating arrangement.
The broad wooden frame surrounding the map has been refinished in a deep Old World Oxblood—a complex wine-red and brown tone worked with a smoky umber glaze. Darker shading has been developed along the corners, seams, edges and recessed moldings to give the finish depth and a naturally time-enriched appearance. The result is neither a bright red nor a glossy burgundy; it is a sophisticated, nearly tobacco-black oxblood that reveals warmer red undertones as the light moves across the surface.
At the center is an inset leather-look panel depicting an antique-style world map. From a distance, the map reads primarily as a muted composition of tobacco, walnut and earthy brown. Upon closer inspection—or when viewed in direct sunlight—subtle colored undertones become visible throughout the geography, adding unexpected dimension to the otherwise restrained palette.
The leather-look map surface displays considerable vintage variation and naturally developed patina. Irregular darker and lighter passages, softened color, tonal modulation, faint surface lines and areas of wear are visible across the panel. These variations are not significant damage or deep scratches; they are part of the table’s authentic aged presentation and give the map its layered, timeworn character.
Under direct or raking light, the panel also exhibits a delicate, intermittent glitter-like or reflective effect. It is unknown whether this subtle sparkle was incorporated into the original design or applied to the surface at a later point in the table’s history. We have chosen to retain it as part of the piece’s unusual decorative character. Under ordinary interior lighting, the map maintains its predominantly warm brown appearance.
A continuous row of aged dark-brass nailheads surrounds the map inset, providing definition between the softly patinated panel and the oxblood frame. Nailhead trim appears only around the map panel.
The substantial skirt and four carved cabriole-style legs are finished in the same layered oxblood and smoky umber glaze. Restrained, intentionally variegated antiqued-gold gilding highlights selected raised leaf carvings and traces the smooth stepped molding beneath the skirt. The gilding is hand applied and softly irregular, with darker areas allowed to remain visible through the gold. This broken, burnished quality gives the detailing depth without making the table appear overly ornate or newly manufactured.
The interplay of muted cartography, aged brass, dark oxblood and worn gold creates a piece that feels collected rather than decorated. It would be particularly striking in a library, study or living room furnished with aged leather, olive velvet, antique rugs, dark walnut and warm neutral upholstery.
This is a refinished vintage piece rather than a factory-new reproduction. The makeover has been intentionally designed to preserve evidence of age, surface modulation and the individual character of the original materials. Variations in the map panel, hand-worked glaze and gilded details are integral to the table’s one-of-a-kind presentation.

This is a vintage, previously owned piece that has been professionally reimagined while intentionally retaining the character, surface variation and visual depth developed over time. The surrounding wooden frame, substantial skirt and carved cabriole-style legs have been refinished in a layered Old World oxblood treatment with a smoky umber glaze. Darker corners, visible tonal modulation and subtle variations in the hand-worked finish are intentional elements of the design rather than defects. Selected raised carvings and the smooth stepped molding beneath the skirt are accented with hand-applied antiqued-gold gilding. The gilding is purposely variegated and softly irregular, allowing portions of the darker base finish to remain visible. It is not intended to resemble uniform factory-applied metallic paint. The inset leather-look world map panel retains its original vintage appearance and displays considerable patina, wear and color modulation. From a distance, the surface reads primarily as warm tobacco and earthy brown. Closer inspection and direct sunlight reveal subtle colored undertones, darker and lighter areas, softened imagery, faint surface lines and naturally varied coloration. No significant damage, deep scratches or major gouges were observed on the map panel. However, it is not a uniform or factory-perfect surface. The visible areas of patina, softened color and age-related variation have been retained as important aspects of the table’s authentic character. The map surface also exhibits a delicate, intermittent glitter-like or reflective effect under direct or raking light. It is unknown whether this subtle sparkle was incorporated into the original design or applied to the surface at a later point in the table’s history. It has been retained and is most noticeable upon close inspection or in direct sunlight. The aged nailhead trim surrounding the map panel shows appropriate vintage variation and patina. Nailheads appear only around the inset map surface; the molding beneath the skirt is smooth and does not contain nailhead or beaded decoration. The table is structurally substantial and presents beautifully. As with all vintage furniture, minor evidence of previous use and age should be expected. Please review the listing photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description. less
