Originally designed by Isamu Noguchi in 1954, the Rocking Stool is one of the designer’s most sculptural and unconventional seating designs. Rather than relying on a traditional four-legged construction, Noguchi explored the relationship between tension, balance and geometry, resulting in a stool that appears almost weightless while remaining remarkably stable.
This design is an authorized Vitra re-edition from 2001, produced in collaboration with the Vitra Design Museum. It features the characteristic dark-stained wooden seat and base, connected by a dynamic arrangement of slender chrome-plated steel rods that create the illusion of movement even when the stool is at rest. The open wire construction gives the design a light architectural presence, making it equally suitable as occasional seating or as a sculptural accent within an interior.
The Rocking Stool perfectly illustrates Noguchi’s multidisciplinary approach to design, combining influences from sculpture, engineering, and functional furniture into a single, harmonious object. Though conceived more than seventy years ago, the design still feels remarkably contemporary, blending seamlessly into both modern and eclectic interiors.
This example retains its original Vitra Design Museum label, confirming its authenticity as an authorized re-edition. It is presented in good vintage condition with only minor scratches to the wooden surfaces and some light wear to the underside, consistent with careful use and age.
