A striking 1988 hand-thrown stoneware covered jar by Turn & Burn Pottery of Seagrove, North Carolina. Founded by David and Deborah Garner, Turn & Burn is part of Seagrove’s celebrated pottery tradition and is known for handcrafted stoneware and carved decoration.
This substantial covered jar is particularly appealing for its richly detailed, continuous hand-incised narrative scene. Against a deep cobalt-blue ground, cream-colored carved imagery wraps around the vessel, depicting a rustic house, mature trees, stone wall, foliage and landscape elements, along with a horse and figure. The extensive carving gives the piece a wonderful folk-art quality while showcasing the craftsmanship associated with North Carolina studio pottery.
The jar retains its coordinating fitted lid with raised knob and contrasting warm cream glaze. Subtle throwing lines remain visible beneath the blue glaze, reinforcing its handmade character.
The underside is hand-inscribed “Turn & Burn Pottery,” “Seagrove N.C.,” and “1988,” along with additional hand-incised inscriptions and a Christian fish symbol.
Approximately 10.5 inches high including lid and approximately 6.5–7 inches at its widest point. Please refer to measurement photographs for additional detail.
An especially decorative example of late-20th-century Seagrove pottery, equally suited to a collection of North Carolina studio ceramics or as a distinctive blue-and-white accent in a traditional, rustic, farmhouse or collected interior.
