An exceptional piece of mid-century American silver with remarkable corporate provenance, this substantial sterling silver cigarette case was produced by the renowned Napier Company of Meriden, Connecticut. Dating to 1950, the case makes a commanding impression with its oversized proportions, considerable weight, and bold linear design.
Both the front and back are decorated with sharply defined engine-turned horizontal stripes, creating a striking architectural pattern that bridges the sophistication of late Art Deco design with the emerging streamlined aesthetic of the mid-century era. A discreet applied monogram plaque decorates the exterior, while the interior is richly gold washed, providing a beautiful contrast to the cool sterling silver.
The case becomes especially interesting when opened. Inside is a large retaining arm bearing a presentation inscription, documenting that the piece was presented by James H. Napier, president of the Napier Company, in 1950. This direct association with the company's longtime president transforms the case from an attractive period accessory into a fascinating piece of Napier history.
The Napier Company traced its origins to the late 19th-century E. A. Bliss Company, a manufacturer of jewelry and giftwares that relocated to Meriden, Connecticut, in 1890. James H. Napier joined the company in 1914 and became president and general manager in 1920. Under his leadership, the business became Napier-Bliss and, in 1922, adopted the Napier Company name. Napier remained president until his death in 1960. During his tenure, the firm became particularly celebrated for stylish jewelry and finely designed giftwares, including sterling silver and silver-plated smoking and bar accessories. The timing of this presentation is especially appropriate: 1950 marked the firm's 75th-anniversary period, placing this case squarely within an important chapter of Napier's history.
This is an unusually large and substantial case, measuring approximately 5 inches wide, 3 inches deep, and just under 0.50 inch high. It weighs an impressive 165 grams, giving it a satisfying solidity in the hand and emphasizing the quality of its construction. Good vintage condition with light signs of wear and handling. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
With its bold engine turning, gold-washed interior, impressive scale, and documented connection to James H. Napier himself, this is a particularly compelling example of vintage Napier silver—equally appealing as a gentleman's accessory, decorative object, or addition to a serious collection of American silver and mid-century design.
