This antique Nupe door from Nigeria is carved across three narrow planks with an asymmetrical program of figures rather than a single repeating pattern: a long-beaked bird, a rounded shelled or armored creature, a spotted quadruped, an owl-like face, and antelope-type forms worked with hatched fill. This kind of varied, panel-by-panel emblem composition, mixing zoomorphic and geometric elements rather than repeating one motif, is characteristic of Nupe carving.
The back shows a raised horizontal wood cleat near the top, original construction joining the three planks, in a deep, near-black patina. The carved face is crisp and well-preserved throughout, with no significant cracking or loss. This is a genuinely distinctive panel for the density and variety of its carved figures, five identifiable forms worked into a single door rather than one motif repeated. Displayed upright, its dark tone and varied silhouette reward a spot where natural light can pick out each figure in turn.
