This mixed vocabulary of distinct symbols is characteristic of Nupe carving, where each emblem carries its own meaning rather than functioning as pure ornament. The planks are joined with horizontal wood battens set with large hand-forged nails, structural elements left visible rather than concealed. The wood carries a deep, even black patina, built up over long handling rather than applied as a stain, giving the piece its striking ebonized appearance.Door condition is honest and stable: fine checking consistent with age, no structural cracking, and a patina too deep and even to have come from anything but genuine use over decades.
