Measuring an impressive 30 inches wide, this substantial decorative screen combines Japanese folk art, social history, and distinctive architectural design in a piece that immediately commands attention.

The painting presents a remarkably lively sake brewery or sakagura, populated by numerous figures engaged in the daily activities of production and trade. Workers can be seen among large brewing vessels and equipment, while a blazing furnace appears deeper within the building. Other figures occupy the raised interior rooms, and pack horses accompanied by attendants appear in the foreground transporting goods. Particularly noteworthy are the numerous containers and coverings prominently marked with the Japanese character 酒, meaning “sake” or “alcohol.” Together, these details create an engaging narrative of brewing, handling, administration, and transportation rather than simply a decorative architectural scene.

The painting is housed within a striking dark wooden architectural frame, complete with a peaked roof-like upper section and substantial freestanding base. The form is reminiscent of the traditional Japanese tsuitate (衝立)—a single-panel freestanding screen historically used as a decorative partition, privacy screen, or architectural element. At this smaller scale, the piece would have provided a dramatic decorative accent and may have been intended for display on a large cabinet, counter, platform, or other furnishing. The piece was likely produced circa 1900-1930, it is made of lightweight wood.

The screen measures approximately 30 inches wide, 22 inches high, and 6.5 inches deep. It displays beautifully with an appealing timeworn surface and expected signs of age, including wear, marks, surface variation, and imperfections to the painted and wooden elements. There is a split to the wood across the entire panel vertically, it is hard to tell if this was intentional or an age-related split to the wood. Please review the photographs carefully for further condition assessment.

Adding considerably to its interest, the reverse retains an old handwritten Japanese paper label attached directly to the wooden structure. Portions of the inscription remain difficult to decipher because of age and wear, but its survival provides another intriguing element of the screen's Japanese history and construction. The label has been intentionally left undisturbed.

The subject matter is particularly appealing. Traditional sake brewing played an important role in Japanese commercial and community life, and this remarkably detailed composition captures not merely the finished product but the people, equipment, architecture, transportation, and activity surrounding the trade.
