Softly hand-colored bands trace the zodiac and ecliptic, while the Milky Way winds dramatically across the heavens. Along the lower portion, a detailed scale charts the sun’s position in the ecliptic for every day of the year, combining early astronomical science with striking decorative appeal.

Engraved by Elijah Hinsdale Burritt for his influential star atlas, Atlas was designed to illustrate the Geography of the Heavens.

Elijah H. Burritt (1794–1838) was a Connecticut-born astronomer, mathematician, and pioneering American celestial cartographer, celebrated for transforming the complex science of astronomy into remarkably beautiful and accessible visual form. His landmark Geography of the Heavens and accompanying Atlas of the Heavens became among the most influential American astronomical works of the early 19th century, and his striking celestial engravings are now prized for both their scientific history and exceptional decorative appeal.
