The "Legal-Size" paperweight was created in 1984 by legendary graphic designer Tibor Kalman and his highly influential New York design studio, M&Co.Conceptual Design and Irony.
The object perfectly captures Kalman's philosophy of injecting irony, wit, and high design into everyday, mundane objects. He was fascinated by things normally considered trash, famously noting that "crumpled paper can have a real nice look."The paperweight creates an intentional visual paradox for the corporate desk.
Because of its status as a benchmark piece of 1980s postmodern design, the original 1984 paperweight was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and rests in their permanent Architecture and Design collection.
