Antique 19th Century Victorian Cranberry Glass & Wilcox Silver Plate Co. Bride's Basket
An exquisite, complete Victorian era art glass bride's basket featuring a stunning cased cranberry glass bowl nestled inside its original, highly ornate quadruple silver-plated frame. Traditionally gifted as a luxury wedding present in the late 19th century, this beautifully preserved center piece features a personalized provenance engraving on the shoulder.
Creator / Manufacturer: Wilcox Silver Plate Co. (Meriden, Connecticut, USA)Design/Catalog Number: 5521
Circa / Age: Late 19th Century (Circa 1880–1895)
Country of Origin: United States
Materials: Cased Optic Art Glass, Quadruple Silver Plate over Base Metal
Style: Victorian / Traditional
The Glass Bowl: crafted from cased art glass, the bowl transitions elegantly from a translucent, soft pink center to a deep, rich cranberry hue around the perimeter. Molded into a textured diamond-quilted optic pattern, the glass catches and diffuses light beautifully. The wide rim is dramatically structured with an intricate, deeply crimped and ruffled "pie-crust" edge. The underside is molded with a smooth circular collar base engineered specifically to secure within its matching metal frame.
The Silver-Plated Frame: the substantial, footed frame is a masterwork of Victorian metalcraft by the renowned Wilcox Silver Plate Co.. It is stamped "Wilcox Silver Plate Co. Quadruple 5521" on the lower inner rim. The structure includes double-rail support bars arching up to a geometric, squared-off top handle adorned with branching floral buds. Heavy repoussé and chased detailing blanket the lower pedestal and upper bowl collar, depicting intricate scrolls, spiraling ferns, and floral rosettes resting on stylized shell feet.
Historical Inscription: Adding unique, authentic character, the sloped shoulder of the base is cleanly hand-engraved with the name of its original recipient: "Cora H. Young."✨
Condition: Excellent Antique Condition: Presented with minor, age-appropriate surface wear, light scuffing, and gentle patina consistent with over a century of display and care.
Glass Status: Clean and structurally sound, with no chips, cracks, structural fractures, or repairs. Normal minor production bubbles ("seeds") are present within the antique glass matrix. Silver Status: The quadruple silver plating remains bright and displays an elegant aged luster. Light tarnish remains in the deep recesses of the repoussé work, beautifully accentuating the design's depth.
Dimensions: Overall Height (Base to Handle): 11", Width 11", Bowl Diameter 10".
