Brilliant floral watercolor painting by Mary Burke (American, 20th Century). Signed "M. Burke - SWA" lower right. Titled "Floral" and signed "Mary Burke" on verso. Unframed. Exhibited and member of the San Francisco Women Artists and Gallery. Exhibited San Francisco Arts Festival 1976. Unframed. Image size, 20"H x 26"W. Mary Burke is a graduate of the Graphic Arts department of Stanford University and also studied Arts and Crafts in Berkeley under Hamilton Achille Wolfe and at the San Francisco School of Fine Arts and Colorado College. She is a member of the Santa Cruz County Artists Co-op which currently conducts Sunday shows at the Felton Covered Bridge. Mary was born on the Lower East Side of New York City on December 22, 1916, one of eight children of Louis and Ada Weitz, and she graduated from Seward High School. She married Paul Burke August 21, 1943, and subsequently moved to Ardsley in Westchester County, New York, where she raised her children Bob and Lorraine. She had a distinguished career as assistant to the superintendent of schools of Edgemont School District. She was a gifted watercolor artist, and won many awards for her floral and landscape paintings. She was a signature member of the Society of Western Artists and a member of many local artist societies.
SFWA Past and Present
San Francisco Women Artists (SFWA), founded in 1887 as the "Sketch Club", began as an independent group of women artists who met to share and critique one another's work. SFWA is one of the oldest arts organizations in California and continues to support, promote, and exhibit the work of talented Bay Area artists.
SFWA is a nonprofit membership organization presenting monthly-juried exhibits, showcasing paintings, photography, sculpture, ceramics and jewelry. SFWA actively seeks to collaborate with other non-profits, while also inviting community participation by offering workshops, student internships, and special events and activities.
