Titled “Plan d’une Palestre Grecque, d’après Vitruve,” the engraving presents an ideal reconstruction of the architectural complex used in ancient Greece for physical exercise, athletic training, education and philosophical discussion. The highly detailed plan shows a large central peristyle courtyard surrounded by colonnades and specialized rooms. These are identified in the engraved key and include halls for philosophers, the ephebeum for young men, the coryceum for ball games, bathing rooms, a changing room or apodyterium, warm and cold baths and other facilities. Long exercise grounds flank the main complex, including the xystus, a covered exercise area for athletes, and the stadium. Gardens and tree-lined spaces are also incorporated into the design, illustrating how Greek gymnasia combined athletic, educational and social functions. The plan is particularly interesting because the ancient Greek gymnasium was much more than a sporting facility. It was also an important centre of education and intellectual life, where philosophy and physical training formed complementary parts of Greek culture. A decorative and historically fascinating architectural engraving suitable for collectors interested in ancient Greece, classical architecture, sport, the Olympic tradition and Vitruvius.
