Fine english pierced basket in pearlware-type earthenware, decorated in underglaze blue transfer printing and dating from the first quarter of the 19th century.
the oval body features an elaborate pierced lattice design composed of diamond-shaped openings punctuated by small blue floral motifs. The gently shaped rim is decorated with floral reserves and scrolling ornament inspired by chinese blue-and-white porcelain.
at the centre is an intricate figurative scene surrounded by luxuriant vegetation, executed in underglaze blue transfer print. Such chinoiserie-inspired patterns became particularly popular among british potteries during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
the form belongs to the tradition of english chestnut or fruit baskets, decorative pierced serving pieces produced by a number of british manufacturers during the period. These baskets were sometimes originally accompanied by a matching stand or underplate.
there is no identifiable manufacturer’s backstamp on the underside. A small hand-applied blue mark is visible on the base and is most likely a workman’s or production mark, rather than a maker’s signature.
without a documented factory mark, the piece is conservatively attributed to england, probably staffordshire, circa 1800–1830.
