The composition features a lush gathering of pansies and violas, painted in wonderfully muted shades of violet, deep blue, lavender, creamy yellow, rust, and soft burgundy. The flowers are loosely arranged against a dark, atmospheric background, allowing the brighter blossoms to emerge dramatically from the shadows. Delicate highlights and softly modeled petals give the bouquet a romantic, almost velvety quality.

The painting is an oil on an artist’s panel or board, rather than canvas. The unframed panel shows considerable age and patina, including surface wear, fine cracking and abrasions that add to its authentic antique character. The darkened reverse and aged edges also suggest genuine age. See less
