Early 19th Century English Regency Burr Walnut Two-Compartment Tea Caddy Box
An exceptional early 19th-century lat Georgian to Regency period tea caddy featuring beautifully figured burr walnut veneers. The rectangular top and front facade showcase a rich, active wood grain, expertly framed by dramatic cross-banded zebrawood borders and delicate line inlays. The edges are finished with elegant ebonized trim, a hallmark of fine early-19th-century cabinetry. The lid opens on two recessed brass stop hinges to reveal a fully finished mahogany underside and an ebonized rim. The interior houses two separate tea blending compartments, each retaining its original, fully intact zinc/lead foil lining with a wonderfully oxidized patina. Both compartments feature their original, completely removable mahogany canister lids accented with turned ebonized pull knobs. The front retains its original brass escutcheon keyhole and working mortise lock. Included is the antique barrel key, decorated with a stunning, vintage gold-tone leaf filigree charm featuring a central seed pearl accent. A highly collectible, untouched piece of social history in remarkable condition.
Story / Behind the Piece
In the Regency era, tea was a highly valuable luxury commodity imported from China and India. It was kept under lock and key by the mistress of the house. Two-compartment caddies like this one were designed to separate costly green and black tea leaves, allowing for custom blending at the drawing-room table. The intact foil lining indicates this piece was lovingly preserved and never converted into a jewelry or stationery box, making it a rare find for serious collectors.
Exceptional antique condition. The burr walnut veneers are smooth with a deep, warm patina. Minor age-related surface wear and faint superficial scratches consistent with 150+ years of use. The original interior foil lining is fully intact with natural oxidation but no major tearing. The lock mechanism is functional, and the custom filigree key charm is securely attached.
