this original art nouveau bookcase was probably made around 1902 in vienna and, according to current knowledge, is attributable to the austrian architect otto prutscher. An important reference for this attribution can be found in the magazine das interieur from 1901. A very similar piece of furniture, designed for the painter count von prutscher, is pictured there. The formal similarity to the present bookcase suggests that this design also originated from the circle of otto prutscher.

stylistically, the piece of furniture belongs to the context of the vienna secession and the viennese modernism that developed from it. In contrast to the often floral and organic french art nouveau, the viennese variant is characterized by increasing geometricization, symmetry, and a reduction of ornamentation. Artists and designers such as josef hoffmann and koloman moser developed a formal language in which function, construction, and aesthetic order were closely intertwined. Otto prutscher belongs to that generation of austrian architects and designers who significantly shaped this development.
