Sultan is known for taking familiar subjects—including flowers, fruit, still lifes, and industrial forms—and reducing them to bold, simplified shapes. His work often occupies an interesting space between representation and abstraction: the flowers here are immediately recognizable, but their exaggerated scale, flattened forms, irregular outlines, and strong tonal contrasts make them feel more like graphic symbols than conventional botanical imagery.

This 2007 print is signed and numbered 38 as part of a limited edition of 100.

Donald Sultan (b. Asheville, North Carolina, 1951) emerged as an important figure in American contemporary art during the 1980s. Sultan received his Bachelors of Fine Arts at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and his Masters from the Art Institute of Chicago. His first solo exhibition was in 1977 and since then, his work has been shown in many collective and personal exhibitions in museums throughout the world, including The Institute of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Palacio de Velazquez in Madrid, The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, The New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris.
