Antique 14" Royal Worcester Snake Handle Ewer Shape 137 A. Stowell Boston Blush Ivory
Made in England c. 1880s – 1890s for the A. Stowell Co. Boston importer.
Approx. 14" High x 6" Wide to Handle x 5 1/2" Diameter at Widest.
Magnificent and highly collectible Royal Worcester blush ivory fine porcelain ewer, standing an impressive 14 inches tall.
This is the large-scale, exhibition-sized variant of the historic factory Shape 137, featuring one of Royal Worcester’s most sought-after figural designs: a fully modeled, three-dimensional snake (serpent) acting as the handle.
This particular piece was a custom luxury export order, featuring the red stamped retailer back stamp for A. Stowell & Co. of Boston, Massachusetts, a prestigious late 19th-century jeweler and luxury importer.
The ewer features a classic ovoid body finished in Royal Worcester’s iconic satin matte "Blush Ivory" glaze.
It is meticulously hand-painted with delicate late-Victorian wildflowers, thistles, and foliage, highlighted by heavy, raised liquid gold detailing.
The handle is a masterpiece of Victorian ceramic modeling, depicting a serpent slithering up the neck of the jug. The snake's tail anchors into a basket-weave molded collar at the shoulder, while its head rests elegantly near the heavily gilded, scalloped trefoil rim.
The crisp, three-digit factory shape number 137 is impressed into the underside of the base.
Stamped in red underglaze is the historic retailer mark: "A. STOWELL & CO. BOSTON."
Excellent used antique condition. Free of chips, cracks, or hairline fractures. The delicate snake head, tongue, and rim are completely intact. Minor, expected age-related wear to the gold leaf., but the floral paint remains vibrant and crisp.]
* Repairs [Example: Absolutely no signs of restoration, professional repair, or over-painting. Clear bell-like ring when tapped gently.]
