An original 1859 woodblock print from the famous collaboration between two giants of Japanese printmaking: Utagawa Toyokuni III (Kunisada, 1786-1865) and Utagawa Hiroshige II (1826-1869). From 'Kannon Reigenki' (Records of Kannon's Miracles), it illustrates the Saikoku pilgrimage, 6th temple - Tsubosaka-dera in Yamato - with the tale of Sugagaru being sent by Emperor Yuryaku to capture the thunder god (Raijin).
The design carries both artists' signatures, with the Hiroshige landscape background and Kunisada figure work combined in the celebrated collaboration style of the series. Sheet approx. 35.5 x 23.5 cm (14 x 9.3 in). Condition reflects its age; please review the photographs.
