An original Meiji-period woodblock triptych by Utagawa Toyonobu (1859-1886), one of the most promising young masters of the Utagawa school before his premature death. The scene shows the famous vanguard race at the Battle of Uji River (Ujigawa Senjin Arasoi no Zu) during the Genpei War, with Sasaki Takatsuna and Kajiwara Kagesue urging their horses across the water - a favorite subject of Japanese warrior prints.
The original Japanese seller described this set as well preserved ('保存良い'), and it remains a complete three-sheet composition with strong color. Combined sheet size approx. 28.3 x 14.2 in (standard oban triptych). As an antique, minor age-related wear is possible; please confirm details in the photos.
