This is a beautiful vintage Chinese wooden box, crafted from a dense, dark hardwood (resembling Zitan or Rosewood) with a rich, lustrous patina and striking "cow hair" grain visible across the surface.
The Inlay: The top lid is the focal point, featuring a delightful and meticulous mother-of-pearl (shell) inlay. It depicts a cheerful, plump child (the "Lotus Boy") dressed in a pink tunic, lying prone among green lotus leaves. The boy is holding a stem with a lotus pod. In Chinese folk art, this specific motif is a visual pun for "Birth of a Noble Son" (连生贵子) or represents purity and blessing.
Hardware: The front of the box is fitted with a beautiful, aged brass latch in the shape of a traditional Chinese "Ruyi" cloud/coin, adding a touch of antique elegance.
The interior is clean and offers ample space for storing small jewelry, rings, tea pouches, or precious keepsakes. Its compact size makes it perfect for a vanity, desktop, or display shelf.
