c. 1900s; mfd. by American Art Works Co. - Coshocton, OH for Pocahontas Fuel Co. - New York
Early lithographed tin-over-cardboard advertising sign featuring the portrait of "Pocahontas" used by the Pocahontas Fuel Company, one of the largest producers and distributors of smokeless coal in the United States. The company operated out of New York's Broadway offices with mines in West Virginia, as listed along the lower edge of the sign. The portrait, framed in gold leaf typography and printed in vivid oil-toned hues, was emblematic of early 20th-century American imperial nostalgia branding, romanticizing regional identity to sell industrial power.
