The Ssal-Duiji (쌀뒤주), commonly shortened to duiji or duiju, is a traditional Korean wooden rice chest. Historically, it served a vital dual purpose: it was a functional household item designed to protect Korea's most valuable staple crop.
For centuries in agricultural Korea, uncooked rice (ssal) was treated as a sacred commodity and a symbol of wealth.
Rice is highly sensitive to moisture and pests. The thick wooden walls of the duiji insulated the grain, keeping it dry and free from insects or rodents.
It was considered the heart of the domestic sphere. Usually kept in the main room (anbang) or the pantry, it was strictly managed by the matriarch of the household.
Nice antique condition with authentic patina with a few hairline cracks of the rafters that stuck out if the main box but if sturdy condition.
