Both pieces feature Freyer’s “Ammoniten” relief, named after the fossil forms that inspired its repeating spirals and layered ridges.

The decoration is formed directly in the porcelain rather than applied to its surface. Light and shadow reveal the pattern gradually, giving the matte-black finish depth and movement.

Hans Martin Freyer (1909–1975) was a German painter, graphic artist and industrial designer. He worked for Rosenthal from 1964 to 1974, developing relief patterns and surface structures for porcelain and glass. His best-known Rosenthal design is the “Plissée” series, while “Ammoniten” reflects the same interest in repetition, texture and changing light. This piece has an attribution mark,
