The square-sectioned body is mould-blown into a deeply pitted, fissured surface that reads as a face of split granite, and the colour runs as a gradient: near-black brown at the rim, through honey amber, down to almost colourless at the foot. Held against the light the whole thing turns molten.
Thick-walled and heavy for its size — the density is part of the point.

Signed on the base and retaining its original Kumela factory label.

Kumela was founded in Riihimäki in 1933 and moved from utility glass into decorative art glass through the 1960s, with Kaj Blomqvist, Armando Jacobino and Pentti Sarpaneva shaping its modern output. The family sold the works to Humppila in the mid-1970s, which makes the Blomqvist years the factory's high point for collectors. This piece has an attribution mark,
