A sculptural centerpiece designed by Pertti Santalahti for Humppila
Glassworks, Finland, in the 1970s and known in the trade as "Iceberg". A core of near-black smoked glass runs up through the stem, cased in a heavy clear layer torn open into a crown of outward-flaring petals.
The piece rises from a narrow foot into a crown of torn, outward-flaring petals, the whole surface left in a raw frozen texture that scatters light in every direction - a form that reads as broken pack ice or thawing frost rather than as a vessel. Solid and substantial in the hand, with the weight that Humppila's mould-worked art glass is known for.
Pertti Santalahti (1941–2015) trained in sculpture at the Arts and Crafts Institute in Helsinki and graduated as a designer in 1962. His Humppila work of the 1970s belongs to the height of Finnish textured art glass, alongside Tauno Wirkkala's Revontulet series for the same factory.
Equally at home as a centerpiece, a low flower bowl, or a standalone sculpture on a console. This piece has an attribution mark,
