Historical context: small bedside tables of this type—known in french as "table de chevet"—were a common feature in the bedrooms of middle-class and upper-middle-class homes during the 18th and 19th centuries. They served as readily accessible storage next to the bed and were often made in pairs. The design language of the louis xv style—curved lines, cabriole legs, and floral marquetry—continued to be produced and mass-produced in french workshops well into the 20th century, making furniture of this type widespread and stylistically influential even beyond its original period.
